Loblolly Pine — Native Evergreen

from $14.95

Fast, tall, evergreen structure for young woods.

Loblolly is the pine of the Southern woods. It grows quickly, stays green all year, and gives a new planting height and winter structure long before the hardwoods catch up. Its long needles come in bundles of three, and the wind makes a sound in them that no other tree makes.

Every loblolly we sell came up on its own on our sanctuary property in Georgia. We lift the volunteers by hand and grow them on in containers. They are local seedlings, not nursery stock.

About Loblolly Pine

  • Growth: fast, often 2 ft or more a year once established

  • Hardiness: zones 6–9

  • Light: full sun

  • Soil: adaptable, including clay and poor soils

  • Wildlife: year-round cover for birds, and seed for songbirds and squirrels

  • Type: evergreen native pine

‍ ‍

An Honest Note on Privacy

Loblolly is a great screen for the first ten or fifteen years and a great windbreak for life. As it matures, though, it naturally drops its lower branches and becomes a tall tree with a high crown. For lasting privacy at eye level, plant it behind a lower evergreen such as Thuja Green Giant. The pine takes the height and the Thuja fills the view.

‍ ‍

Where to Plant It

  • Full sun, open ground. Loblolly will not thrive under an existing canopy.

  • Windbreaks and back boundaries, where height matters more than low branches.

  • Mixed into new woods, for evergreen structure among the hardwoods.

  • Give it room. Keep it well away from the house, septic lines and power lines. It gets big.

‍ ‍

First-Year Care

  • Plant in late fall through early spring for the best start.

  • Water deeply through the first growing season.

  • Mulch a ring a few inches deep. Pine straw is perfect.

  • No fertilizer in year one.

  • Keep grass and weeds back in a small circle for the first two years. Young pines hate competition.
