Mycorrhizal Fungi Bio-Shield Inoculation

from $1.00

An optional upgrade for your starter saplings. Each sapling gets a root-dip in premium concentrated mycorrhizal spore gel before shipment — designed to maximize root surface area, speed establishment, and reduce transplant shock after planting. Priced as an add-on to your tree order.

‍ ‍

What It Actually Does

Mycorrhizal fungi form a partnership with tree roots that is the normal state of affairs in a forest and the exception in a nursery pot. The fungal threads are far finer than root hairs and reach into pore spaces roots cannot, effectively extending the root system well beyond the root ball.

  • Water and nutrients: the fungal network gathers both from a much larger volume of soil than the roots alone can work

  • Transplant shock: a seedling that can find water in week one recovers faster from being moved

  • Phosphorus in particular moves poorly through soil, and this is the main way trees get at it in the wild

‍ ‍

When It’s Worth It

We’d rather tell you when to skip it than sell it to everyone.

  • Most useful on the smallest sizes, where root volume is the limiting factor on how fast the tree gets going

  • Most useful on poor, compacted, disturbed or new-construction soil, where the native fungal population has been stripped out

  • Most useful on oaks and pines, which are heavily mycorrhizal in the wild

  • Less critical if you’re planting into established, undisturbed woodland soil that already has a living fungal network

  • Not a substitute for water. It helps a tree find moisture; it cannot invent it. First-summer watering still decides the outcome.

‍ ‍

How It’s Applied

We do it, not you. Each sapling is root-dipped in concentrated spore gel here before it ships, so the inoculant is already in contact with the roots when the tree arrives. There is nothing extra to mix, measure or remember on planting day.

Add it to any tree order on this site — it is priced per tree as an add-on.
